Introducing: Meta Monday, a new weekly post that will address the current state of Board Game Resource. We’re starting to get more and more readers, and I couldn’t be happier! A big huge “thank you” goes out to anybody who checks the site, or who happens to be reading this right now. Unfortunately, BGR is still mostly a one man job, and sometimes that man isn’t able to publish content as often as he would like. On Meta Mondays, I will try to give a projection of what can be expected from the following week, or I’ll just talk about anything that relates to the site in general.
As for this week:
Yeah, I know, I know. I gave some big talk about Star Wars Week, and here I am, not posting articles on the daily like I said I would. Unfortunately, things have gotten pretty busy. Finals are here, and I’ve got one more day of some pretty intensive studying to do, and then the next day, it’s off to my home state, 400 miles away! This is an eleven hour drive, so that’s at least two more days of business before I’m finally settled in. After that, however, expect some great content to come your way! Due to the impending excitement that will explode around the Force Awakens, there will still be Star Wars articles that will follow in the days after the movie’s release, partially to make up for the last couple of days, and partially because it’s just an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. Other, non-Star Wars content is on its way, so you’ll have no reason to feel left out if you’re not as obsessed with Star Wars as I am!
Reviews have been pretty dry lately. This is due in part to how busy I’ve been, but it’s also a result of my photography space getting extremely cluttered and unusable from end-of-the-semester pileup. I’ve been wanting to post a review, but it’s gotten to the point where I’d rather just wait until I’m out of here, at which point I’ll have access to resources that will greatly improve the quality of reviews. Although I can’t give an exact timeframe, expect to see reviews for 7 Wonders: Duel, Queen of the Hill (A great Kickstarter game that’s relaunching soon), Constantinopolis, and Imperial Assault: Twin Shadows at some point in the relatively near future.
Upcoming additions to Board Game Resource.
Although it’s been hectic finishing up the semester, I’m excited for the future of Board Game Resource. I have some projects cooking that will further enhance the site, and make it, hopefully, more enjoyable to all readers. Here are some of the things I’m hoping to achieve within the next couple of months:
-Higher quality pictures: A few days from now, I’ll indefinitely have access to an SLR camera, along with a much, much better photography setup. This should dramatically improve the quality of pictures in both reviews and normal articles, and it’s something I’m pretty excited about. I like being as exhaustive as possible when I cover games, and it can be a nuisance when you’re limited by your photography setup.
-Video content: Yep, I’d like to start working on videos. I’m not quite sure exactly what my vision is yet, but my timeline is to have video content up and running by March. I definitely want to do video reviews, but as someone who has never dabbled in “Youtubing,” it will likely take some time to figure out how to do it, and also what kind of style/content I’d like to focus on. If you have any ideas of what you’d like to see from BGR video content, comment here or contact us to send some suggestions! BGR is for the readers, so I’m interested in knowing what kind of demand there is.
-Board game pages/resources: This is part of the original vision I had for BGR, and it’s something that I’m still working on. Although it’s little more than a blog right now, my vision for Board Game Resource is to become something bigger than that; an actual resource for tabletop gamers. I’m working on information pages for board games right now, not unlike what you see at BoardGameGeek when you click on a page for a game. Ideally, I would eventually like to reach the point where you can search for just about any game and find it, as well as resources such as erratta, rulebooks, or community discussion. I’m trying to figure out how to make this work for BGR. For example, do I want users to have the power to put up pages, or will it be from the admin-end? What can be added to them? Etc. This is a big step, and even when it’s figured out, it’ll likely be a slow-burn process getting pages up for games, but it’ll be a step in the right direction for the ultimate vision of Board Game Resource. One of the tricky parts to this is designing it with future user functionality in mind, which brings us to our next point:
-Membership and User functionality/interactivity
I would love for the readers to play a more prominent role on this site in a capacity far beyond the anonymous comment system we have right now. I’m beginning the process of implementing a membership feature (free, of course), and by “beginning the process,” I mean “thinking and reading about it.” In other words, there are no concrete plans yet, but expect some features in the coming months that will allow you and other users to interact more with the site in new and interesting ways. Once again, message us or comment if you have ideas of things you’d like to see in this area!
-Board Game Giveaways
Our last item on this list, I’d like to start having giveaways. In fact, the first one should occur shortly after Christmas, so stay tuned! You won’t have to do much at all, and you’ll have a chance to win a free game! I don’t know how consistently this will be a thing, but it will be at thing, and I”ll make it known loud and clear when it is.
Overall, there’s a lot of great stuff on the horizon. I hope you’ve been enjoying the site, and that you will continue to do so! Thanks so much everybody, and happy holidays!
